Funds to care for State's Heritage

The State Government allocated more than $244,000 to 56 projects to repair and restore State Heritage Places across South Australia. Funds were directed towards conservation and stabilisation works, particularly where the work will enhance the financial viability of a place. Projects supported in 2006/07.

State Heritage Areas of SA website launched

Designed to celebrate and interpret South Australia's seventeen State Heritage Areas, this website could be best described as an 'electronic coffee-table book'. The site is packed with information, maps and images including the popular 'Stories & Images' section, which allows personal stories of these areas to be published and shared. Take a virtual tour of these unique areas at www.stateheritageareas.sa.gov.au

Heritage advice delivered direct to more local communities

Heritage Advisers work closely with local Councils across a range of community heritage issues while providing advice and assistance to individual owners of heritage places. In 2006, the Heritage Advisory Service network expanded to include the Flinders Ranges Council and Burnside City Council. See the full list of Advisers.

2006 Schools Heritage Competition

Now in its fourth year, the competition continued to attract impressive entries from schools across the state, this year interpreting the theme Heritage Connections: links with our past. Entries included an iMovie showing how the Royal Adelaide Show connects all South Australians, a podcast tour of Semaphore and Largs Bay, and a Powerpoint presentation where the images were printed on fabric to create a quilt. View the winning schools and entries.

'SA Open Heritage' a great success

Initiated by DEH and developed in partnership with the History Trust of South Australia, this popular new addition to History Week threw open the doors to 74 of Adelaide's State heritage-listed places.

Stage 2 of the 20th Century Heritage Survey underway

Places considered to be of State heritage significance for the period 1928 to 1945 will be documented in the second stage of this DEH-managed survey. Flagged for completion in late 2007, the survey period includes the Depression and the Second World War. View the Stage 1 (1946-1959) Overview History.

Heritage Conservation Seminars

The Painting Older Buildings seminar presented a wide-ranging look at the sensitive business of painting heritage structures. Participants learnt about paint systems, applied decorative finishes, workmanship, colour schemes and more.

The second seminar for 2006, Keeping Cemeteries Alive, provided those with responsibility for looking after historic graves and cemeteries with close exposure to materials, techniques and approaches that form the basis for long-lasting care of cemeteries.

Support for Local Government

Administered through DEH, the State government provided $135,000 to local Councils to undertake heritage surveys and reviews during the 2005/06 financial year. This work provides important support for effective management of local heritage.

SA Heritage Council

The newly-formed Heritage Council met four times during 2006. A strategic planning session resulted in an 2006-2009 Action Plan that puts a framework around the Council's priorities: to articulate a vision for heritage in SA to 2036 and to provide strategic advice on the interface between State and Local Heritage Policy.

DEH SA Built Heritage Research Fellowship supported for a second year

Ms Louise Bird is completing her work on Russell Ellis' domestic architecture and the second awardee, Dr Adam Dutkiewicz, has commenced work on the architecture of Brian Claridge.

Five new State Heritage Places entered in the SA Heritage Register

A former powder magazine keeper's cottage near the Adelaide Gaol, a slab hut built by Ferdinand von Mueller at Bugle Ranges, St Andrew's Anglican Church at Walkerville, a variety of structures on Schmidt farm at Hahndorf and the former Le Fevre Peninsula Cooperative Society Ltd Store at Exeter met one or more of the criteria for significance detailed in the Heritage Places Act and had their entries in the South Australian Heritage Register confirmed.

Conference papers delivered

Brian Samuels, DEH Principal Heritage Officer, delivered his paper 'The History Trust of South Australia: an idea before its time?' at the 15th State History Conference held in Adelaide in May 2006. The conference, titled In History We Trust, celebrated the 25th anniversary of the History Trust of South Australia.

Senior Maritime Heritage Archaeologist Terry Arnott presented on the topic of 'South Australia's WWII coastal defence sites' to the AIMA(Australasian Institutute for Maritime Archaeology Inc)/ASHA (Australian Society for Historical Archaeology) conference held in Darwin in September.

Behind the scenes

Compiling and maintaining accurate databases, monitoring the status of places, ensuring sensitive development (725 Development Applications relating to State Heritage Places were considered by DEH in 2006), assisting local councils, researching, recording and fieldwork. Such work forms the foundation for heritage protection in this State.
