Heritage achievement celebrated
A cottage, a school, a City Hall, a set of gates, a plan, a group
of volunteers - all winners in the 2005 Edmund Wright Heritage Awards.
The common theme? A passion for heritage, hard work, commitment
to doing things the 'right' way and seeing it through to the end.
A giant leap forward for heritage legislation
The Heritage (Heritage Directions) Amendment Act 2005 came
into operation on 17 November 2005. This Act renamed the Heritage
Act 1993 the Heritage Places Act 1993 and includes important
changes to assist heritage management in South Australia. More information:
'Getting into the Act', page
6, Heritage SA Newsletter, Edition 27, October 2005.
2195th State Heritage Place entered in the
South Australian Heritage Register
Places meeting one or more of the criteria for significance detailed
in the Heritage Places Act may be protected by entry as State
Heritage Places in the South Australian Heritage Register. The most
recent addition, and the last for 2005, the Dunn Memorial Church
at Mt Barker.
Windows to the past opened for outback travellers
A partnership between the Department for Environment and Heritage
and the South Australian Tourism Commission has resulted in the
installation of interpretive panels at seven heritage sites along
the Birdsville and Strzelecki Tracks, and at Cordillo Downs Station
- see larger article in

Heritage advice delivered direct to more
local communities
Heritage Advisers work closely with local Councils across a range
of community heritage issues and also provide advice and assistance
to individual owners of heritage places. In 2005, the Heritage
Advisory Service network expanded to include Victor Harbor, Upper
Spencer Gulf and the Outback. A new service in the Flinders Ranges
will commence from 1 January 2006. See the full list of Advisers
at http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au/advisory.html#contact.
SA Shipwrecks now safer under new laws
The proclamation of the Statutes
Amendment (Environment and Conservation Portfolio) Act 2005
extended protection for shipwrecks by declaring all wrecks 75 years
and older as 'historic', and therefore protected.
Online and free! - The Manning Database
of South Australian history launched
This valuable site indexes a large number of South Australian
newspapers for a range of subject areas from 1837 to 1936 and
in now available through the State Library of South Australia
website at http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/manning.
Compiled by Geoffrey Manning, the index was purchased by the State
Government on the recommendation of the State Heritage Authority
and DEH
reached agreement with the State Library for the Index to be hosted
on its web site.
New strategic heritage body formed to
lead the way in 2006
New legislation paved the way for the formation of the South
Australian Heritage Council, appointed at the end of November,
to replace the State Heritage Authority. Chaired by Mary Marsland,
and comprising experts from a range of fields, the Council will
provide strategic advice to the Minister for Environment and Conservation
on heritage issues as well as administering the SA Heritage Register.

2005 Schools Heritage Competition
This year's theme, Our heritage: Their stories - telling tales
of heritage places, encouraged students to discover the stories
of local places and to share those stories with others. For details
of prize winners see http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au/schools_comp2005.html.
Database of SA Architects and their works
funded at UniSA for two years
Expected to hold several thousand entries when completed, work
on the database started in August and is progressing well. It
currently holds around 1000 entries.
$$$ allocated and distributed to conserve
State Heritage Places
We assess and prioritise requests for help carefully to get the
most value from available funds. The result? Conservation help for
around 70 State Heritage Places across the State in the 2005-06
Heritage Grants Program. For more information about heritage grants
see http://www.heritage.sa.gov.au/grantsawards.html.
Behind the scenes
Much of our work is invisible. Compiling and maintaining accurate
databases, monitoring the status of places, ensuring sensitive
development, assisting local councils, researching, recording,
fieldwork. This work forms the foundation for heritage protection
in this State, and we look forward to doing it all again in 2006.
