Outback Heritage
Professional heritage conservation advice is available to Outback
communities as the result of a joint initiative between the DEH
Heritage Branch
and Outback Areas Community Development Trust (OACDT). The service
aims to help preserve places of heritage significance in the remote
communities of the Unincorporated Areas of the State.
Some funding assistance is also available for conservation works,
with priority given to places with recognised historical significance
or that play a considerable role in a community's function or identity.
If you are aware of any such projects in 2007/08 and beyond, please
contact DEH
Heritage Branch
on (61 8)

Oodnadatta Heritage Survey now online
Completed in 2001 with a very limited printed run, this heritage
survey can now be viewed or downloaded here
or browse to it from the Publications and Resources page of the
DEH Heritage website. The survey area includes the Oodnadatta Track
and a corridor fifty kilometres wide on either side starting around
50km west of Marree and ending where the former Ghan Railway Line
crosses the South Australia - Northern Territory border.
188 Gilles Street Restoration - the former
Beresford Arms Inn
Support from DEH
is helping Adelaide City Council to conserve the former Beresford
Arms Inn, built in 1839. Read all about it and see photos and video
of the work being done to conserve South Adelaide's earliest remaining
hotel-related building at the Council's web page 188
Gilles Street Restoration. [South Adelaide's oldest hotel building
still in use as a hotel appears to be the Rob Roy in Halifax St,
a portion of which dates from 1842. The oldest hotel licence in
South Australia (31 March 1837) is held by the Edinburgh Castle
Hotel (originally known as 'Guthrie's') in Currie Street.]

Amendments to the Environment Protection
and Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act
The Environment and Heritage Legislation Amendment Bill (No. 1)
2006 - 414 pages of amendments to the Environment Protection and
Biodiversity Conservation (EPBC) Act - was introduced to the Australian
Parliament 12.10.06 and came into effect on 19 February 2007.
The principal purpose of the amendments as regards historic heritage
is to streamline assessment procedures for the National and Commonwealth
Heritage Lists and establish a more orderly approach for assessing
nominations. Initiatives include:
- calling for nominations for National places within one or more
themes that are set for approximately 12 month periods by the
Minister on the advice of the Australian Heritage Council (AHC)
and establishing an annual call for nominations within those themes;
- requiring the creation of priority lists for assessing nominations
for the National and Commonwealth Lists and allowing the AHC to
exclude places it believes unlikely to possess National or Commonwealth
heritage values;
- allowing Commonwealth staff to consult with others regarding
their draft assessment reports;
- streamlining emergency listing processes; and
- removing the ability to include overseas places in the National
Heritage List and creating a new List of Overseas Places of
Historic Significance to Australia.
