Applications for heritage funding close 30 June
Applications for funding will be received until 30 June from:
- Local Councils, to carry out or review local heritage surveys,
undertake Heritage Plan Amendment Reports or establish local heritage
incentive schemes. For more information contact Senior Heritage

- Owners of State Heritage Places, to help conserve those aspects
of a place that contribute to its heritage significance, especially
urgent conservation works to significant built fabric. Projects
that plan for the future of a place, improve its financial viability,
or incorporate environmentally sustainable solutions will also

Russell Ellis monograph now available
Architect Russell Ellis and his contribution to the modernist style
is profiled in this recently released monograph from the University
of South Australia's Architecture Museum. Based on DEH SA Built
Heritage Research Fellow Louise Bird's three volume research report,
the illustrated monograph surveys and analyses Ellis's residential
designs and reveals the development of his ideas about modernism.

Shady Grove Unitarian Church & Cemetery now a State Heritage
Place
This well-preserved building at Shady Grove, near Hahndorf, is
the only surviving 19th century Unitarian Church in the State, and
is associated with one of only two Unitarian congregations in South
Australia. It demonstrates the religious diversity typical of mid-nineteenth
century South Australia and reveals information about the history,
development and practice of the Unitarian Church in this State.
SA Memory website launched by State Library of South Australia
SA Memory is a multimedia online gateway to South Australian culture
and heritage, past and present. It illustrates and interprets themes
highlighting South Australia's people, places, issues and events
from the colony's beginnings to now. The site showcases a wide range
of archival and published materials, including:
- original documents and transcripts
- images - photographs, posters, art works, interactive maps,
and more
- sound recordings, including oral histories
- historic film footage
There is also an opportunity for the public to contribute to the
SA Memory website and to be kept up to date via a mailing list http://www.samemory.sa.gov.au/site/page.cfm
Heritage Surveys/Plan Amendment Reports - Update
The following Councils are undertaking or about to undertake Heritage
Reviews/Surveys, prior to a Heritage Plan Amendment Report (PAR)
being prepared:
- Adelaide Hills Council (Onkaparinga & Torrens Valleys only)
- Flinders Ranges Council & the District Councils of Mount
Remarkable, Orroroo/Carrieton & Peterborough (Joint Heritage
Review)
- City of Holdfast Bay (1930s Heritage)
- District Council of Kingston
- Mid Murray Council
- City of Mount Gambier
- District Council of Naracoorte Lucindale (Township of Naracoorte
only)
- District Council of Wattle Range (Township of Penola only)
- City of Whyalla
The following Councils currently have Heritage PARs under Interim
Authorisation:
- Light Regional Council (Heritage)
- District Council of Mount Barker (District Wide Heritage)
- District Council of Tatiara (Heritage)
- City of Tea Tree Gully (Local Heritage - Phase 2)
- Town of Walkerville (Local Heritage - Supplementary)
The following Council recently had a Heritage PAR approved by the
Minister for Urban Development & Planning:
- City of Adelaide (City Heritage and Character (North Adelaide)
- Part 2)
South Australian Tourism Awards - nominations close 2 July
The heritage and cultural tourism category aims to recognise tourism
operations that foster a greater understanding of history, heritage
and/or culture. Entrants should offer visitors an insight into Australia's
history and heritage and its contemporary culture. More information:

World Heritage goes National
On 21 May 2007 the Australian Government Minister for the Environment
and Water Resources, Hon Malcolm Turnbull, included the following
World Heritage properties on the National Heritage List:
- Williandra Lakes Region, Balranald, NSW
- Greater Blue Mountains Area, Katoomba, NSW
- Central Eastern Rainforest Reserves, Lismore, NSW
- Lord Howe Island Group, Lord Howe Island, NSW
- Wet Tropics of Queensland, Cairns, Qld
- Fraser Island, Eurong, Qld
- Australian Fossil Mammal Site, Riversleigh, Qld
- Great Barrier Reef, Townsville, Qld
- Australian Fossil Mammal Sites, Naracoorte, SA
- Shark Bay, Denham, WA
- Purnululu National Park, Halls Creek, WA
- Tasmanian Wilderness, Strathgordon, Tas
- Kakadu National Park, Darwin, NT
- Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park, Yulara, NT
- Heard and McDonald Islands, Southern Ocean
- Macquarie Island, Southern Ocean
These sixteen places are in addition to the Royal Exhibition Building,
Carlton, Victoria, which is also both a World and National Heritage
Place.
This decision means that South Australia now has three National
Heritage Places, namely:

History Council of South Australia's 2007 Public Lecture

The History Council's fourth annual public lecture will be presented
by Professor Susan Magarey at 6pm on Tuesday 24 July in the Lecture
Theatre, Institute Building, State Library of South Australia, North
Terrace, Adelaide. The lecture will be followed by light refreshments.
