Heritage Advisory Service

The Heritage Advisory Service in South Australia provides professional heritage and conservation advice to local communities. The Advisers are experienced heritage practitioners jointly funded by the Department for Environment and Heritage(DEH) and local councils.

Assistance for Councils

Heritage Advisers can:

  • advise councils on development proposals affecting State and local heritage places
  • advise the local Heritage Committee (usually as a member of the committee)
  • assist councils to develop local heritage policy, carry out heritage surveys, and establish and manage Historic (Conservation) Zones
  • help create local awareness and responsibility for the care of heritage places
  • assist councils to implement heritage programs (eg main street studies, heritage incentives schemes and heritage trails) and promote heritage through interpretive signs, publications and cultural tourism initiatives.

Assistance for Individual Owners

Heritage Advisers also provide individual advice and assistance to owners of heritage places. They can help owners:

  • plan repairs, maintenance, colour schemes and conservation work, and find suitably-skilled contractors
  • avoid potentially costly mistakes that compromise the heritage significance of their place and possibly its market value
  • understand technical advice from contractors and tradespeople, particularly in cases of conflicting advice
  • plan alterations, additions and renovations that are sympathetic to the heritage significance of their place
  • reinstate missing elements such as fences, landscaping and other lost features and fittings that contribute to the heritage significance of their place
  • lodge Development Applications and grant applications.
