Radiation Protection Committee

The Radiation Protection Committee (the Committee) is an expert advisory body established under section 9 of the Radiation Protection and Control Act 1982 (the Act).

The Committee comprises 10 Members and 9 Deputy Members. Members are appointed by the Governor following South Australian Government Cabinet approval. The Committee's Members and Deputies and their attributes, as specified in section 9 of the Act, are listed below.

The functions of the Committee are specified in section 12 of the Act. These are to advise the Minister and the EPA in relation to:

  • the formulation of regulations under this Act
  • the granting of licences under the Act including the conditions to which they should be subject
  • the investigation and reporting upon any other matters relevant to the administration of the Act at the request of the Minister or the EPA, or of its own motion.

The Committee advises the Minister and the EPA on all aspects of radiation protection in medical, industrial, scientific and public uses of ionising and non-ionising radiation. It reviews the actual and potential exposures of South Australians to radiation in the endeavour to minimise its harmful effects. The Committee considers all applications for personal licences to use radioactive substances or X-ray apparatus, and company licences to mine or mill uranium ores and advises the EPA and the Minister on granting of those licences. The Committee also provides expert advice and comment to the Minister and the EPA on matters including:

  • qualifications, training and examinations required for personal licences issued under the Act
  • applications for exemptions from licensing and other requirements of the Act or Regulations
  • radiological aspects of environmental impact assessments for relevant major projects
  • approvals sought under licences to mine or mill radioactive ores, including programs for control and monitoring of doses received by workers and members of the public arising from such operations
  • reports submitted to the EPA under conditions on licences to mine and mill radioactive ores
  • radioactive waste management activities associated with mining, industrial, medical, scientific and commercial operations
  • controls and follow-up of radiation accidents and emergencies
  • the Annual Report on the Administration of the Act required by section 22 of the Act, prepared by the EPA
  • international and national radiation safety Codes of Practice, Standards, Guidelines and Recommendations.

The Committee meets approximately every three months. The EPA Radiation Protection Division provides the administrative support to the Committee.
