Introduction
The EPA's Radiation Protection division is responsible for regulating
the use of ionising radiation in medical, research, industrial
and mining organisations, including use of X-rays, and the safe
transport, storage and disposal of radioactive substances.
This division also advises on radiation safety of non-ionising
radiation sources, including lasers, microwaves, powerlines, mobile
phones and communication towers.

The Radiation Protection division of the EPA has five sections:

Radiation Protection Committee
The Radiation Protection Committee (the
Committee) is an expert advisory body established under section
9 of the Radiation Protection and Control Act 1982 (the
Act).
New Regulations for cosmetic tanning units
Regulations have been passed to protect South Australians from the harmful effects of UV radiation emitted by cosmetic tanning units. From 14 March 2008, tanning unit owners and operators must abide by the Australian Standard, and comply with other requirements. From 1 March 2009, any person who operates a tanning unit must be licensed.

Radiation facts
UV radiation
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the sun; it has high energy and is non-visible. UV radiation consists of three categories, UVA, UVB and UVC.

been concerns regarding their effect on human health.

Mobile phone base stations
The rapid expansion of cellular mobile telephone networks has
resulted in increasing numbers of mobile phone base stations,
also known as mobile phone towers.
In response to concerns about the effect of electromagnetic radiation

Powerlines
Electromagnetic fields are associated with anything that produces,
carries or is powered by electricity. Radiation Protection has
prepared answers to some valid questions concerning safe levels
of exposure to fields generated by high voltage powerlines and
other electrical and magnetic sources.

Sale
Regulations 54 and 55 require that anyone selling, replacing or
disposing of x-ray apparatus or major components must notify the
division in writing within seven days of the sale or disposal.
Relocation
Regulation 63 requires that the owner of an X-ray apparatus
which is relocated must notify the division in writing within
fourteen days of the change.
