  Whale and calf

The Head of Bight was visited in 1998 by over 100 Southern Right Whales. The whales are usually present from late May to early October and can be viewed from the spectacular cliffs. Victor Harbor is also a favoured spot for the whales and is usually visited by serveral whales each season.

The Whale Watching Code

Whale Watchers

Whales are protected! When you're whale watching, use this five step code. You'll be helping the environment and the whales!

1. Help the environment by keeping off the sand dunes. Please use the beach or viewing areas provided. Use marked walkways to get to the beach. Dunes and the plants on them are fragile and vital to beach preservation.
2. Help the whales by keeping well clear. Swimmers, divers, boats and aircraft can startle whales.
3. Help the whales by keeping quiet when they are close to the shore. Loud and unexpected noises can scare them away.
4. Help the locals by respecting their property and taking your rubbish home. Keep it clean for everyone to enjoy.
5. Help yourself by keeping clear of cliff edges and breaking surf. Freak waves occur along the coast, and cliffs are dangerous.

Southern Right Whales are protected. You can help the recovery of these endangered species by following this code and reporting any infringements to National Parks and Wildlife SA

The Whale Trail

The Southern Right Whale trail is a trail of interactive signs dotted around the South Australian coast. Each sign has a different theme and features a "rubbing panel". By placing a piece of paper over the panel and rubbing with a soft pencil you can collect an image. There are ten to collect at the locations shown on the map.

Whale Trail Map

The Southern Right Whales trail was installed during the 2000 whale watching season.
