Adelaide International Rose Garden

Adelaide International Rose Garden
Adelaide International Rose Garden

Opened in October 2000, the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide International Rose Garden takes visitors on a journey of discovery through a series of garden spaces each revealing a comprehensive collection of different types of roses used in different garden styles. Its overall structure and geometry complements the backdrop of the adjacent Bicentennial Conservatory.

Planting commenced in August 1999, and the 1.5 ha rose garden displays over 5,000 roses including sections devoted to Australian bred roses, single roses, heritage roses and pillar roses. It includes a walkway highlighting roses selected for specific Australian causes (Olympic Gold, The Children’s Rose etc.) a sunken garden, a circular garden, several pergolas and mixed companion plantings to add seasonal interest.

Together with the National Rose Trial Garden the International Rose Garden attracts great interest from national and international rose lovers thus making a major contribution to tourism and to the enjoyment of every visitor to the Adelaide Botanic Garden.

Sir Cliff Richard Rose in the Adelaide Botanic Garden

Planting the Sir Cliff Richard RoseWhile in Adelaide for the Gerard McCabe Jewellers Celebrity Tennis Challenge, Sir Cliff Richard planted a rose named ‘Sir Cliff Richard’ in the Adelaide Botanic Garden’s International Rose Garden.

Flanked by a small group of eager fans and rose enthusiasts, Sir Cliff’s official planting signified the floribunda rose’s availability for sale from Corporate Roses and the Bone Growth Foundation for AUD$14.00 each, from 12 January 2004. Part proceeds from sales of the rose will benefit the Bone Growth Foundation who have organised the Gerard McCabe Jewellers Celebrity Tennis Challenge as their major annual fundraiser.

During his speech, Sir Cliff Richard joked that as the Adelaide Botanic Garden already features a memorial dedicated to Elvis, he thought it was only fitting that he left his own mark on the Garden. The floribunda rose, which features a lovely pink bloom and was bred in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom, is on display in the centre of the main rose arbour in the International Rose Garden, and is identified by a small gold plaque.
