Prior Knowledge

Prior Knowledge was developed as a special Encounter 2002 walking trail in the Adelaide Botanic Garden to highlight the traditional plant knowledge of South Australian Aboriginal people.

The trail provides a glimpse of the intimate and extensive plant knowledge of South Australian Aboriginal people prior to the exploration of our shores by Matthew Flinders and Nicolas Baudin. This 'Prior Knowledge' was held by over 50 distinct South Australian Aboriginal groups and was the secret to successfully living with the land for thousands of years.

Ribgna Green, Director of the National Aboriginal Cultural Institute Tandanya, launched Prior Knowledge on the 27 February 2002.

Prior Knowledge was a partnership between the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide and Tauondi Aboriginal College. Many different staff from the gardens contributed to the trail development and to the success of the launch. Further support for the project was received from the Open Access College and the Plant Biodiversity Centre.

Originally developed as part of the Encounter 2002 program, the popularity of the walking trail meant that visitors were able to enjoy this sign-posted walking trail until the end of July 2002.
