Education and Sustainability

The Department for Environment and Heritage (DEH) recognises that school and community based education is essential to achieving ecologically sustainable development. The DEH Environmental Education Unit promotes environmental sustainability education in schools and works in close partnership with the Department of Education and Children's Services.

A general sustainability website is available with links to other relevant websites.

Environmental Education and Landcare Network (EELN)

The Environmental Education and Landcare Network (EELN) provides community environmental educators with an email network, a contact directory about environmental education programs in South Australia, and regular forums throughout the year. The EELN web page includes information about upcoming events, newsletters and links related to environmental education.

See the Environmental Education and Landcare Network web page

South Australian Sustainable Schools

South Australian Sustainable Schools (AuSSI-SA) is supporting schools and preschools to progress Education for Sustainability (EfS) in everyday learning and practice. A sustainable school is one that develops a shared vision, values, understandings and practices to achieve a more sustainable community. The whole community, including students, staff, parents, government, business and community groups are partners in achieving sustainable lifestyles. Through South Australian schools, AuSSI-SA brings people together to facilitate an understanding and commitment to achieving sustainability.

South Australian Sustainable Schools (AuSSI-SA) is:

  • supporting schools to implement the model for EfS
  • helping to plan and communicate sustainability outcomes
  • introducing EfS into systems planning and policy in central office and school districts
  • influencing curriculum innovations to include EfS
  • forming partnerships with environmental education service providers to achieve improved environmental and educational outcomes
  • a partner in developing the national AuSSI
  • sharing EfS stories across the State
  • establishing a network for EfS.

Currently AuSSI-SA is working on a Sustainable Schools Management Guide. Any school can request a Draft copy of the Management Guide by contacting Jonathan Shankar-Noble at the Department of Education and Children's Services.

Environment Reporting Education Resource

The Environment Reporting Education Resource aims to engage students, teachers and the community in exploring the State of the Environment Report for South Australia 2003. It covers seven environmental themes: atmosphere, biodiversity, coasts and the sea, heritage, human settlements, inland waters and land resources. You can use the resource to find out what is happening to the South Australian environment, learn about the kinds of environmental care projects you can participate in and how to develop your own environmental action project.

See Environment Reporting Education Resource.

Sustainable Landscapes

The Sustainable Landscapes project is a collaborative partnership that aims to demonstrate and promote appropriate park and garden design, plant species selections and sustainable horticultural practices for South Australian environments including effective, efficient and appropriate water use. Sustainable landscapes are healthy and resilient, and will endure over the long term without the need for high input of scarce resources such as water.

See Sustainable Landscapes.

WOW - Wipe Out Waste Program

WOW - Wipe Out Waste is a South Australia-wide program to assist schools, from pre-school to Year 12, to minimise waste in a whole school community approach. The education resource provides information for schools to develop and implement appropriate waste management systems, and information and learning activities for teachers to incorporate waste issues into the curriculum. WOW - Wipe Out Waste is a program of Zero Waste SA delivered by KESAB environmental solutions.

See Wipe Out Waste.
