Community Engagement
Community Engagement in West Region
Protecting and conserving our environment is not a task that we
can achieve alone. The whole community, including other government
agencies, local government, Indigenous groups, industry, land-holders,
educational institutions, community groups and the wider community,
plays an important role in successful biodiversity conservation.
Our community engagement activities aim to encourage and facilitate
action for behavioural and environmental change. Community engagement
activities that we undertake in West Region relating to biodiversity
conservation include:
 |
- increasing community awareness and involvement in biodiversity
conservation on Eyre Peninsula and the Far West through the media,
publications such as information sheets
and newsletters, the Internet, and public events
including field days
- increasing community knowledge and skills to undertake biodiversity
conservation activities by providing opportunities for community
capacity building through seminars and workshops covering topics
such as wildlife identification and Phytophthora
control
- coordinating, supporting and involving volunteers,
including Friends of Parks members, threatened species recovery
volunteers, and other interested groups and individuals
- supporting education and involvement of youth in biodiversity
conservation through the Discover
Nature on Eyre Peninsula Education Resource, professional
development workshops for local teachers, awareness raising visits
and on-ground action projects.
These activities have received funding from the Australian
Government's Natural Heritage Trust through the Eyre
Peninsula Natural Resources Management Board.
