The South Australian Arid Lands Biodiversity Strategy has been prepared in partnership with the South Australian Arid Lands Natural Resources Management Board and is a direct whole of government partnership response, within the South Australian Arid Lands, to South Australia's Strategic Plan target of ‘lose no species’. The Strategy provides an overarching framework to halt and where possible reverse the decline in the regions terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity over the next ten years. The Strategy consists of six documents that identify the priority actions to conserve biodiversity within the South Australian Arid Lands. These include:
- South Australian Arid Lands Region-wide Priority Actions
- Channel Country Conservation Priorities
- Flinders and Olary Ranges Conservation Priorities
- Gawler Conservation Priorities
- Sandy Deserts Conservation Priorities
- Stony Plains Conservation Priorities

How To Make An Effective Submission:
To make sure your submission is as effective as possible:
- state which document you are referring to, as several are on public exhibition;
- make your text concise and clear;
- refer to the page, section number, paragraph and/or priority, target or action that you are commenting on;
- if you disagree with a priority, target or action, state your reasons and say what you would prefer in its place, and why;
- if you are commenting on the accuracy of background information, provide references for your information sources; and
- it is also important to say which sections of the document you agree with.
Please note your submission will become part of the public record and available to anyone who requests a copy unless you specifically request otherwise.
Method of analysing Public Submissions
After the closing date for public submissions, the points made in each submission will be collated according to the section of the draft plan they address. Each point made will be assessed and the draft biodiversity strategy amended using the following criteria.
The draft biodiversity strategy will be amended if the point:
- provides additional information of direct relevance to management;
- indicates or clarifies a change in Government legislation, management commitment or management policy;
- proposes actions that would better achieve or assist with management objectives; or
- indicates omissions, inaccuracies or a lack of clarity.
The draft biodiversity strategy will not be amended if the point:
- addresses issues beyond the scope of the strategy;
- was already in the strategy or had been considered during its preparation;
- offers a neutral statement, or no change is sought;
- clearly supports the draft proposals;
- is one among several widely divergent viewpoints received on the topic and the recommendation of the draft strategy is still considered the best option;
- is based on incorrect information;
- contributes options that are not possible (generally due to some aspect of existing legislation or Government policy);
What Will Happen To Your Submission:
Public submissions will be referred to the Arid Lands NRM Board for consideration and comment. The Department for Environment and Heritage will provide comments on the submissions based on the above criteria.
After considering all submissions, advice and recommendations the Arid Lands NRM Board and the Department for Environment and Heritage will finalise the biodiversity strategy and it will be made available for downloading from both the SA Arid Lands NRM Board and Department for Environment and Heritage's websites.
The closing date for public submissions is 30 June 2008.
Submissions should be addressed to:
