Investigations and Compliance Unit

The role of the Investigations and Compliance Unit, is to:

  • monitor, detect, deter and to promote compliance of the National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972 and subordinate legislation;
  • protect populations of native animals and plants from illegal exploitation;
  • control possession and trade in wildlife to ensure that captive holding of animals has no detrimental effect on naturally occurring populations or the conservation of wildlife;
  • ensure adequate awareness of the legislation and assist in promoting public awareness through education;
  • encourage the support and cooperation of members of the public in the section's compliance role.

Reporting of Offences

Public assistance is required in the reporting of compliance matters regarding:

  • our national parks and conservation parks (such activities as unauthorised access by vehicles, lighting of fires and the use of firearms in reserves);
  • the illegal exploitation of native animals and plants (such activities as trapping of wild animals, taking animals and plants from the wild, killing of native animals);
  • the unlicensed keeping or trading of our native animals.
