It is estimated that as little as 10% of the original native vegetation in the Northern and Yorke Region remains today. Despite this, more than 430 vertebrate species have been recorded in the region. Of these, 16 are listed as nationally threatened under the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999. A further ten species are listed under the State National Parks and Wildlife Act 1972. Sadly, the Eastern Quoll, Burrowing Bettong, Brush-tailed Bettong, Tammar Wallaby, and the Common Ringtail Possum are now extinct in the region.

These species are typically threatened by the clearance and modification of habitat and by the impacts of introduced plant and animal species. Recovery actions may include habitat restoration, control of invasive species, research and monitoring, and translocations.

Under certain circumstances, species extinct in the wild might also be reintroduced to an area they formally inhabited. One such example is the Tammar Wallaby Reintroduction Program, at Innes National Park on the Yorke Peninsula. Tammar wallabies have been bred in captivity at Monarto Zoological Park and released back into their former habitat at Innes. Translocations have been carried out since November 2004. There are currently 32 wallabies and 7 small pouch young known at Innes. The wallabies are breeding, with at least 15 wallabies being born at the park since their re-introduction.
