Staff in the Northern and Yorke Region are working to provide landholders and other members of the community with information and support. This partnership works both ways, as we receive valuable assistance in the form of local knowledge on historic and current locations of threatened species, and access to sites on private lands. If you have a historic or current record of a threatened species please report it to the regional Threatened Fauna Ecologist or the Threatened Flora Ecologist. Community support for the protection and conservation of threatened species and natural environments is an essential ingredient in the ultimate success of our biodiversity conservation programs. Our community awareness program is supported by the Northern and Yorke Natural Resources Management Board and forms part of the Board's focus on community capacity building. Community awareness events held in 2008 include woodland birds field identification workshops, community workshops on Native Grasslands and Living with Raptors, and a Birds and Bats on your Block information day. Interested community members can help raise awareness within their local community or assist with on-ground works for threatened species and bush management by getting involved with a local community group. Active community groups in the Northern and Yorke Region include the Biodiversity and Endangered Species Team, Threatened Plant Action Group, Native Orchid Society of South Australia, Trees for Life Bush Action Teams, and Friends of Parks Inc groups. For more information about community awareness projects in the Northern and Yorke Region please contact the Northern and Yorke Threatened Species Community Liaison Officer. |
