Biodiversity and Endangered Species Team (BEST)

The Biodiversity and Endangered Species Team (BEST) was established to protect and conserve the local threatened flora and fauna of the Northern and Yorke Region of South Australia.

Members of BEST are passionate, enthusiastic, talented, friendly and dedicated volunteers who give their time for on-ground work associated with threatened species management. Our volunteers also participate in local information days and regional field days to raise community awareness of threatened species issues.

Volunteering with BEST is fun and rewarding, and enables you to participate in a range of volunteer activities.

Some of the projects that BEST was involved in 2011 and that are planned to continue in 2012 are:

  • Pygmy Blue Tongue Surveys
  • Heritage works at the inaccessible Troubridge Island
  • State-wide Fairy Tern Surveys
  • Bat workshops and bat surveys through the Mid North and the Yorke Peninsula (extending to the Southern Flinders in 2012)
  • In October 2011 a ‘Biodiversity Blitz’ was held at Innes National Park involving more than 40 volunteers from 8 different countries. Two Biodiversity Blitz are planned for 2012.

The Biodiversity and Endangered Species Team welcome new members, there is no cost involved and no commitment is needed, just come along and give a hand whenever you can.
