Dr Fred Gurgel

Fred is a marine botanist for the State Herbarium and head of the Phycology Unit.

Fred's research focuses on the study of the marine benthic flora, also known as phycology (ie macroalgae and seagrasses), of South Australia and worldwide.

His ultimate phycological interest is to bridge the fields of taxonomy, molecular biology, organismal biology and biogeography to create a more holistic understanding of macroalgal evolution and biodiversity.

Fred is also interested in understanding how macro and micro-evolutionary processes shape genotypes, phenotypes, biodiversity, and their spatial organization in the marine environment.
