Emu Farming Permits
To farm emus you must hold an Emu Farming Permit. You must also maintain a record/return book and submit returns twice yearly, at the end of April and October.
The Australian model Code of practice for the welfare of animals - husbandry of captive bred emus provides the minimum standards for emu farming. The Code covers the basic requirements for the wellbeing of farmed emus, including protection from:
- predators
- disease
- extremes of climate
- pain, distress, suffering and injury.

The Development Act 1993 (and regulations) and the Local Government Act 1999 (LG Act) allow councils to restrict the species and number of animals a person may keep on their property. It is therefore a good idea that you check with your local council before obtaining an animal as bylaws or restrictions may apply.
