Adelaide Gaol open for business

Self-guided tours continue at Adelaide Gaol after guided tours ended on 31 May.

Department of Environment, Water and Natural Resources Chief Executive Allan Holmes said the self-guided tours provided high-quality information on the 1841 gaol, which was one of the state’s two oldest buildings.

“Small groups and individual visitors to the gaol have been enjoying this informative tour for some time, exploring the gaol at their own pace,” Mr Holmes said.

“Volunteers from the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society have been running guided tours for larger groups and we greatly appreciate their efforts.”

Mr Holmes said DEWNR would no longer have a partnership with the society.

“There has also been an ongoing inability to negotiate a formal agreement with the society – an agreement that is necessary to ensure the appropriate management of the partnership, including the commercial arrangements,” he said.

“For that reason the agreement with the society will conclude.”

Mr Holmes said the department would call for expressions of interest for commercial opportunities at the gaol in the future, including guided tours and a retail outlet.

“We have every hope that the EOI process may also yield new tourism opportunities that will add value to the site,” he said.

“As the custodian of this special heritage place, the department has a responsibility to maximise the number of people who can visit and enjoy it, and to provide the best experiences we can for them.

“The gaol has a wealth of local history within its walls and it will continue to be of interest to the South Australian community and to visitors to the state for many years to come.”

Mr Holmes thanked the Adelaide Gaol Preservation Society for its contribution to the gaol over the years through tours, historical research and caring for artefacts.

“We put great value on the efforts of the many volunteers who work with the department and we are committed to continuing to provide volunteering opportunities at the gaol into the future,” he said.

Adelaide Gaol is open from 10am to 5pm, Sunday to Friday and is available for hire for functions.
