Tomato Tales gets talking

Date Posted: 05 December 2011

The Botanic Gardens of Adelaide has today launched Tomato Tales, an interactive space for people to engage in conversations all about tomatoes.

Tomato Tales provides a virtual space where people can exchange recipes, answer questions, and obtain information about how and why people are growing tomatoes in today’s society.

“Climate change and food security are topical issues, therefore its important to promote and provide resources encouraging people to grow their own food, which is what Tomato Tales aims to do,” said Botanic Gardens of Adelaide Director Stephen Forbes.

“I remember picking tomatoes in our veggie patch when I was a kid, and all children should have memories like this, as well as having an understanding of where their food comes from and the health benefits of it,” he said.

“Great work is being done in South Australia - from farmers markets to public health programs like the Kitchen Garden Initiative at the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide - to reconnect people, especially children, to the value and advantages of growing your own food,” he said

Tomatoes are well suited to the South Australian Mediterranean climate, and there are several different varieties and colours, flavours, and uses for tomatoes.

Tomato Tales will bring new and old gardeners together, exchanging their stories, recipes, hits and tips.
