Heritage directions

In August 2003 Heritage Directions: A Future for Built Heritage in South Australia, a discussion paper outlining the government's proposed future directions for the ongoing management of South Australia's heritage assets, was released for public consultation.

In May 2004 the then Minister for Environment and Conservation, the Hon John Hill MP, announced the government's response to Heritage Directions, including details of an additional $2.9 million over the next four years and on-going additional funding of close to $1 million per annum after that.

Achievements to date have included:

  • proclamation of the Heritage (Heritage Directions) Amendment Act 2005 on 17 November 2005. This Act renamed the Heritage Act 1993 the Heritage Places Act 1993 and included important changes to assist heritage management in South Australia including:
    • a general increase in penalties for breaches of the Act
    • new provisions that require 'reasonable care' of a state heritage place
  • expansion of the Heritage Advisory Service network
  • creation of the new South Australian Heritage Council
  • direct grants to local councils have enabled them to provide additional heritage services, such as survey and assessment programs
  • heritage issues are being promoted through published newsletters, e-news bulletins and the innovative use of the South Australian Heritage Council’s web pages
  • the interpretation of heritage has been improved through the successful Schools Heritage Program and joint projects with the South Australian Tourism Commission
  • a single database for local, state and national heritage places has been established by DENR, in collaboration with the Department of Planning and local government
  • the systematic registration of twentieth century heritage has begun.
