Levels of heritage listing
There are various levels of heritage protection depending on the significance of the place and where it is. These are the levels of heritage protection in South Australia:
Local heritage
There are more than 6,474 local heritage places and areas in South Australia. The protection of local heritage is dealt with through the Development Act 1993. Local councils initiate the statutory process to amend their Development Plans to create local heritage places.

State heritage
There are approximately 2,215 state heritage places and 17 state heritage areas. The entry of state heritage places in the South Australian Heritage Register is administered by DENR for the South Australian Heritage Council.
National heritage
The Commonwealth Heritage List comprises natural, indigenous and historic heritage places on commonwealth lands and waters under Australian Government control. These are identified by the Federal Heritage Minister as having commonwealth heritage values. There are seven South Australian places on the Commonwealth Heritage List.
The National Heritage List is Australia's list of places with outstanding heritage value to our nation. There are five places in South Australia on the list.

World heritage
The World Heritage List includes places that have special universal values above and beyond the values they hold for a particular nation. Only the Australian Government can nominate Australian places for entry on this list. The Naracoorte Fossil Mammal Site is the only South Australian site that is on the World Heritage List.
