Heritage places and areas

South Australia's state heritage places and areas vary in location, size and significance but they all highlight some aspect of our state's heritage:

State heritage areas

South Australia has 17 state heritage areas, chosen because they represent our natural and cultural heritage and capture the state's identity and character. No two state heritage areas are alike. Some areas are recognised for their architecture, layout or contributions to South Australia's development, while others are natural areas of scenic or geological importance.

State heritage places

There are over 2,215 state heritage places entered in the South Australian Heritage Register. The Register includes but is not limited to historical buildings, mine sites and monuments.

Maritime heritage

South Australia's maritime heritage includes both underwater sites such as shipwrecks, and land sites such as lighthouses, jetties and whaling stations. There are 19 ships' graveyards - where obsolete vessels have been deliberately abandoned in South Australian waters, representing 70 vessels you can visit on land, with a kayak or small boat, or as a diver.
