The community
Nearly 28,000 people live in the Coorong, Lower Lakes and Murray Mouth region. A majority of people work in agriculture, viticulture, fishing, manufacturing and tourism.
The area is a popular tourist destination where people can camp, fish, swim, boat, water ski, four wheel drive and much more. In 2008 approximately 138,000 people visited the Coorong National Park.
Because a majority of people in the region are employed in industries that rely on water from the Lower Lakes, the local economy is heavily dependent on the health of the whole Lower Lakes system. The problems associated with less freshwater, acid sulfate soils, salinity, and species loss have greatly impacted on the community.
Securing a healthy, sustainable future for the region is critical in ensuring the economic, cultural and social wellbeing of the region.
The South Australian Government has worked in partnership with the community, scientists, industry and Traditional Owners to develop a long-term plan for the region's future.
Community input has been crucial in developing the plan and direct community involvement and ownership is essential to successfully deliver the actions proposed in the plan.
There are a number of community projects underway to help address the environmental issues facing the region.
