Managing regrowth

The Native Vegetation Regulations 2003 outlines the procedure for managing the regrowth of native vegetation in certain areas where authorised clearance has previously occurred.

Land that is consistently used for commercial agriculture may be cleared of native vegetation regrowth after a minimum of five years following an authorised clearance. However, strategies for dealing with regrowth must to be demonstrated in a Regrowth Management Plan before clearance can commence.

Plans can be prepared by the landowner or a native vegetation consultant (57kb pdf). A Regrowth Management Plan may include a pasture renovation program, practical long-term management strategies for regrowth, and mechanisms for allowing land managers to adopt processes that encourage the natural regeneration of native vegetation. Sections of previously prepared property-wide management plans may also be used provided they contain the required information.

Use the following resources to prepare your Regrowth Management Plan:

standard clearance application must be made when the native vegetation regrowth:

  • has returned to a largely undisturbed natural state on land that has not been consistently used for commercial agriculture
  • is on land that was not lawfully cleared under a previous clearance application.
