Policies and strategic plans
Policies
Two key policy documents inform how the Board manages the key issues of:
- development in the coastal zone
- hazards - coastal flooding and erosion
- protection works
- conservation of coast and marine habitats, including coastal wetlands, rivers and estuaries
- heritage and landscape
- access to the coast
- standards applying to new development with regard to coastal flooding and erosion and associated protection works
- acid sulphate soil development guidelines and risk assessment criteria.
They are:
- policy on coast protection and new coastal development (348kb pdf) adopted in 1991
- Coast Protection Board policy document (1.3mb pdf) endorsed in 2002, revised 20 January 2012.
The Coast Protection Board also works in conjunction with regional natural resources management (NRM) boards. Their focus is on sustaining the state's natural resources from development pressures, including protecting coastal environments.
Strategic plan
In August 2009, the Board adopted the Coast Protection Board strategic plan 2009-2014 (32kb pdf) with three strategic priorities:
- adaptation of existing development to coastal hazards and the impacts of climate change
- ensure new development is not at risk from current and future hazards
- plan for resilience in coastal ecosystems to adapt to the impacts of climate change.
